Paintbox is a record that evolved directly out of my first release with ACT Music, and for that reason it feels particularly special to be releasing it now, three years later. The release of Chroma in 2023 was a turning point that sparked a new and exciting phase of international touring, from which I have learned so much. 

The music on Paintbox is the direct result of the past three years on the road with my quartet, deepening our connections with each other and exploring new ways to truly play and create together. I feel that there is an unmistakable aspect of joy within this music, which truly reflects the atmosphere both on the road and in the studio with these brilliant musicians. We began this journey as colleagues three years ago, and now I’m pleased and proud to call Asaf, Kevin and Elliot my close friends.

I wrote this music with an awareness that it was the beginning of some new and unknown chapter, and because I wanted to explore new colours and stories with these musicians as we went out on tour internationally. Chroma was an exploration of colour within music and its expression for me, and I wanted to take this visual element further with pieces that told stories or evoked strong images for the listener. Every piece on Paintbox is a story in its own way: some describing fantastical scenarios with cowboys, aliens and elves, others describing oceans, trees, forests, or even nostalgic scenes from my childhood in Devon. Each is intended as a springboard for the imagination of each individual listener and I hope that you can find your own stories within the music.

Chroma was inspired by the Greek word for “colour”; this subsequent album takes its name from an alternative translation of that word: “paint”. For me, this is inherently linked to the idea of play and creation, and the joy that permeates what we do. I am immensely grateful to Elliot, Kevin, Asaf, Sonny, Klaus and all my close friends who helped this album come to life.
