At age 26, he was once the youngest record executive in the pop business and president of the major label "WEA Europe" (now Warner). In 1992, at the peak of his career, he made a radical decision: he fulfilled a lifelong dream by founding his own jazz label, ACT. He now considers the 23 years since then as the most important period of his professional life. A life “In The Spirit Of Jazz,” now reflected in a 5-CD box set of his personal best-of productions. From Klaus Doldinger’s Jazz Made In Germany, through blues and beat-era recordings, to European jazz greats like Nils Landgren, Esbjörn Svensson, Joachim Kühn, and Heinz Sauer, and on to the “world music jazz” of Michael Wollny, Iiro Rantala, Marius Neset, Nguyên Lê, Vincent Peirani, and many more. For these recordings—nearly half of all ACT releases—Siggi Loch sat in the producer’s chair himself. For the rest, he relied on a wide range of other producers to ensure diversity. The consistent thread running through all the productions, then and now: discovering and supporting new jazz talents, especially from Europe and Germany. When Siggi Loch turns 75 this year on August 6, he can look back on a music industry career that few can match. Beginning in the 1960s, during the founding era of the modern record industry, his career skyrocketed. At 20, he started as a sales rep for EMI Electrola’s International Special Service. At a time when 80% of the record business was focused on daily pop hits, he traveled to selected record stores in a VW Beetle packed with new import albums. Just two years later, he was called to Hamburg to become label manager at PHILIPS and began his producing career with Klaus Doldinger. At 26, he became the founding managing director of Liberty-Germany in Munich, making him the world’s youngest record executive at the time. In 1972, he was appointed head of WEA Germany (Warner-Elektra-Atlantic), and by 1982 he was named president of WEA Europe in London. He had joined the ranks of international record business top management—thanks to relentless drive and a sharp ear for talent and trends in pop music. But the key ingredient was always his love for jazz. At 15, Loch sneaked into a Sidney Bechet concert in Hanover—a life-changing experience. As a teenager, he initially tried his hand at drumming but was honest enough to admit he lacked the talent for a music career on stage. So he chose to stay close to jazz by working on the other side of the stage. From the beginning, the dream of owning a jazz label was his guiding motivation. Even though pop and rock music dominated the first three decades of his career—highlighted by prominent discoveries like Katja Ebstein, Can, Amon Düül, Jürgen Drews, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Heinz Rudolf Kunze, Helen Schneider, and Ideal—he remained loyal to jazz. Artists like Klaus Doldinger, Jean-Luc Ponty, Al Jarreau, Joachim Kühn, and Philip Catherine also made careers thanks to Loch. When his mentor Nesuhi Ertegün retired as chairman of WEA in 1990, Loch also left his lucrative position to finally realize his youthful dream. By then, he knew the record business inside and out. ACT was born in 1992 as a jazz label. 23 years later, it had become a respected player on the international jazz scene—and, by Loch’s own admission, the most important phase of his professional life. The spirit of jazz has accompanied Siggi Loch throughout his life. It’s only fitting that the 5-CD edition in which he now looks back is titled A Life in the Spirit of Jazz – Siggi Loch 75. A musical autobiography that speaks for itself—even though each track is filled with memories and stories that could easily fill a book. Each CD is dedicated to a different phase of Loch’s musical life. The arc stretches from his first spark of inspiration with Sidney Bechet, to early jazz productions with Klaus Doldinger, Klaus Weiss, Volker Kriegel, and Jean-Luc Ponty, to blues and beat recordings with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, the Rattles, and the Spencer Davis Group, all the way to a 23-year overview of ACT featuring artists like Nils Landgren, e.s.t., Michael Wollny, Joachim Kühn, Nguyên Lê, and the young german jazz and Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic series. A Life in the Spirit of Jazz offers a fascinating cross-section of the passionate and colorful career of a man who has become a “music legend.” Yet this is just a preliminary summary—as the subtitle “at 75” suggests, there may be more to come. Siggi Loch answers that question in the words of Dizzy Gillespie: “I will bop until I drop!” Credits: All music produced by Siggi Loch
