New ACT artist: Laila Biali

„She is an exciting and unique talent and i admire her greatly“ - Sting
ACT welcomes Canadian singer, songwriter and pianist Laila Biali to the “ACT Family Of Artists”. Her ACT-debut, simply entitled “Laila Biali” will be released on January 28th, 2018.
Laila Bialis Music continues the tradition of great contemporary Canadian artists like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Diana Krall or Michael Bublé who completely organically and naturally fused influences of Jazz, Pop, Blues, Soul with the power of great songs. Biali, already highly acclaimed in North America, performed at renowned venues like the New York Carnegie Hall, the Tokyo Cotton Club or the North Sea Jazz Festival and played a celebrated showcase at jazzahead! the world’s most important jazz convention. DOWNBEAT magazine voted Biali in the “album of the year” category.
With ease, Laila Biali combines the concision and accessibility of pop with the energy and openness of jazz - in her strong and diverse original compositions as well as her interpretations of the music of artists like Coldplay or David Bowie. And so, consequently, for the new album she gathers some of the greatest jazz players of North America – like the “Snarky Puppy” members Larnell Lewis (drums) and Mike Maher (trumpet), organist Sam Yahel (Joshua Redman „Elastic“ Band), trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and Bassist George Koller. On the other hand she teams up with A-class session players who are normally more at home in the pop world: like drummer & co-producer Ben Wittman (Sting, Paul Simon), the vocalists Lisa Fischer (Rolling Stones, Sting, Luther Vandross), Jo Lawry (Sting, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel) and Carlos Ricketts (John Mayer, Adele, U2) and organist Glenn Patscha (Sheryl Crow, Marc Cohn).
Laila Biali is an impressive example for a generation of current jazz musicians for which “pure” Jazz is a contradiction in itself and more than anything else an extremely versatile music in which, beyond the polished, over-formated “mainstream”, real musicians and real authors create deep, honest emotions. A music full of passion and intellect, performed with soul and skill. Just like the music of Laila Biali – the new great voice of North-American Jazz.
